The Holidays & The Diabetic...Mapping Out A Great Holiday With M.A.A.P.S.

The Holidays and the diabetic…let’s talk about! The holidays are upon us and we need to prepare our diabetic patients for this time of year. I thought that it would be nice to put together a series discussing this and I came up with an acronym, M.A.A.P.S….helping our patients map out a GREAT holiday! Now, M.A.A.P.S. stands for:

MODERATION

  • A patient can still enjoy good food during the holidays. The key is to not overindulge.

ADHERENCE

  • Just because it is the end of the year and the holidays, we cannot check out from the treatment plan.

ACTIVITY

  • Stick to your exercise regimen! Encourage your patients to be creative at this time and activity doesn’t have to look like going to a gym every days.

PREPARATION

  • Planning ahead and thinking through the holidays traditions (food and activities) can really set patients up for success

SWEETS

  • Should diabetic patients avoid desserts altogether? Let’s unpack this sentiment!

Earlier in the year, I put out a number of posts over food and diabetes detailing The Guidelines and Food Recall (Make sure to check them out if you haven’t) but one thing to note about eating no matter what diet you follow is moderation…nothing in excess!

Helping our patients think through this is key and will ultimately set them up for success! Below are the Youtube videos where I detail this as well as other helpful resources!
