When it comes to diabetes medication, how do nurse practitioners decide what medication would be appropriate for their patient? Now clearly we know that metformin is the first line medication but what do you do when metformin just doesn't cut it? In the post, I am discussing the nurse practitioner’s mindset and what we should consider when prescribing medications for diabetes.

Amylin Analog | Pramlintide…what Nurse Practitioners need to know. This drug class is an injectable drug class and includes the medication pramlintide. It effects the postprandial glucose by slowing gastric emptying and suppressing glucagon secretion. It is indicated for both Type 1 & 2.
Dopamine Receptor Agonists | What You Need To Know // In this video, I discuss the Dopamine Receptor Agonists which includes the drug Bromocriptine.
This drug class has an unknown Mechanism of Action but effects the postprandial glucose. It’s similar to the Alpha Glucosidase Inhibitors and lowers the Hgb A1c minimally about 0.1-0.4%. The African American Diabetic and Heart Patient// I had the opportunity to sit down & chat with NP Colleague, Devyn Nixon, MSN, ARNP, FNP-C. She works in cardiology & since it’s Black History Month as well as American Heart Month, we thought it would be great to discuss the African American diabetic & heart patient. The diabetic patient is 2-3x more at risk for stroke, MI, & sudden death compared to those without diabetes. The African American diabetic has an even higher incidence of macrovascular disease than their Caucasian counterparts. With that being stated, we must not neglect the education, early detection & intervention that can greatly benefit our patients.
