Emotional Awareness During Eating

Hey guys! I wanted to pop in to discuss a way that can assist in the patient’s emotional awareness during eating. One component you can add to your Dietary Food Recall is the location of where they are eating and their feelings at the moment of eating. Let me explain…

  • Location of eating: Think about the example of a patient who has a problem with late night snacking. Being aware of where they are can help stop any emotional eating in it’s tracks. Do they tend to snack at night while watching TV? Before bed? The patient may not be mindful of that action. By identifying the location, you can bring to their attention triggers for them.

  • Their feelings at the moment of eating: When they eat, what emotions are they feeling? Again, if we are looking at trends we can see the emotional eating or the mindless eating.

I created a full video over a thorough food recall that dive into this a bit more so I’ll link that below. As an extra resource, here’s an example of a dietary recall HERE & HERE. If you have questions over how diabetics should eat, last week I posted about the Food Guidelines for Diabetes where I summarized the AACE guidelines. Check that out because it was packed with a lot of great information. Below is a FREE Food Guideline Cheat Sheet & the accompanying video of a thorough Dietary Food Recall from my YouTube channel, Kim E. The Diabetes NP. I would appreciate it if you SUBSCRIBED and followed me over on Instagram, @thediabetesnp.
